Children and education

Children in Vesturbyggð have access to education and a range of leisure activities. This section provides an overview of the school system and how to register your child.

1. The school system

The Icelandic school system is divided into four levels:

  • Preschool (leikskóli): for children under 6 years old
  • Primary school (grunnskóli): compulsory education from age 6 to 16
  • Upper secondary school (framhaldsskóli): optional education after primary school
  • University (háskóli): higher education

2. Preschool (kindergarten)

Preschools (leikskólar) are available for younger children.

  • Applications are submitted through the Resident Portal (Íbúagátt)
  • You will need to provide basic information about the child

After submitting your application, you will receive further instructions.

3. Primary school

Primary school (grunnskóli) is compulsory for all children aged 6–16.

Schools provide:

  • General education
  • Support services for students
  • School meals and daily structure

To enrol a child in primary school:

  • Applications are submitted through the Resident Portal (Íbúagátt)

5. Leisure activities for children

Children can participate in a variety of activities, such as:

  • Sports clubs
  • Music education
  • Youth programs

These activities are an important part of daily life and help children integrate into the community.
