Housing and living

Finding housing is one of the first steps when moving to Vesturbyggð. Both municipal and private rental options are available. This page explains how to find housing and what to expect when renting in Iceland.

1. Finding housing

Housing in Vesturbyggð is available through:

  • The municipality (rental apartments)
  • Private landlords
  • Real estate agencies

The municipality owns a couple of apartments for long-term rent in the area. Availability is limited, and applications are reviewed individually. For information or to apply:

  • Contact the Environment and Construction Department at Town Hall
  • Or apply through the Resident Portal (Íbúagátt), where available

Some employers may assist with housing.

2. Rental agreements (leases)

Before moving in, you will sign a rental agreement.

A lease typically includes:

  • Rent amount
  • Payment schedule
  • Duration of the contract
  • Responsibilities of the tenant

Make sure you understand the terms before signing.

3. Utilities and services

When renting a home, you are usually responsible for:

  • Electricity and heating
  • Water
  • Internet

Waste collection and recycling are managed by the municipality.

Residents must follow local waste sorting rules.

4. Register your address

After moving in, you must register your address with Registers Iceland.

This is required for:

  • Legal residence
  • Access to services
  • Receiving official communication
